Where AI and services run

See where each capability of Nixt Mail runs and whether anything leaves this device, choose where AI runs, and put everything back on this device in one step.

Nixt Mail is made of capabilities — mail, search, AI, calendar and so on. Where AI and services run is the one place that shows, for every capability, where it runs and whether anything leaves this device for it.

Mixing is normal. You might run AI on a model on this computer while everything else stays on the device, or send AI to your own provider account while mail stays exactly where it always is.

Open Where AI and services run

  1. Open Settings with ⌘, (Ctrl+, on Windows and Linux).
  2. In the System group, choose AI and services.
  3. Scroll past the Licence card to Where AI and services run.

The summary line

The first row of the card, Everything at once, says whether anything leaves this device:

  • Everything runs on this device. Nothing is sent anywhere except your own mail servers.
  • N of these send data off this device. — shown in amber when at least one capability sends data away.

Each capability that sends data off this device is marked leaves device beside its name.

If a change could not be saved, the same row goes on to say Nixt Mail could not save this change, so it holds only until you quit. At the next launch the saved choices come back, and says how many of those saved choices send data off this device. The change still applies until you quit.

Put everything back on this device

Click All local, under Everything at once. It puts every capability back on this device or off: Mail, Search, Calendar, Documents and Directory run on this device, and AI and Rosalyn are off. Addresses and choices you had entered for other placements are cleared.

Whether something leaves the device is decided by where requests actually go, not by the label: Your own server at http://localhost:11434 keeps everything on this computer.

Not in this copy of Nixt Mail

Capabilities your copy, edition or licence cannot use are not given rows of their own. They are listed together, under the section’s rows, in a card titled Not in this copy of Nixt Mail, grouped by why — each group a line naming the reason, with a small label for each capability under it:

GroupWhat it means
Part of editionYour edition does not include it; the group names the smallest edition that does. Groups are listed from the smallest edition up.
Not compiled into this buildThis copy of Nixt Mail was built without it. Listed last.
A sentence about the licence, such as the ones belowIt needs a licence, or yours does not cover it.

A capability that All local or Nixt Cloud has set to run off this device, once it can, shows leaves device on its label, and is counted in the summary line.

The licence sentences:

SentenceWhat it means
Capability needs a licence. Everything on this device keeps working without one.It needs a licence, and there is none.
Capability is not included in this licence.Your licence does not include it.
Capability stopped when the licence expired.Your licence has ended.
Capability needs a valid licence. The licence on this device is not valid.

When your edition includes a capability but not every place it can run, a line under the choices says which places your edition allows, and names an edition that allows the rest. See Licence and updates.

Enter a server address

Choosing Your own server shows an address field under the row.

  1. Type the full address, such as https://mail-services.example.com.
  2. The address is saved as you type.
Message under the fieldWhat it means
That is not a complete address — include https:// and a host. The scheme or the host is missing.
Use https. Mail text must not travel over an unencrypted connection. The address uses http:// and is not on this computer.
Only https addresses are supported. The address uses another scheme.

Plain http:// is accepted only for addresses on this computer: localhost, 127.0.0.1 and ::1.

What is stored

Your choices are kept on this device, in Nixt Mail’s settings, as Where AI and services run: which place each capability runs, any server address, and for AI the provider and model name. They never include a key or password — AI provider keys are in the keychain.

  • Export settings in Settings › General does not include these choices. Set them again on another computer.
  • Reset all settings and Restore defaults do not change them, because putting them back would forget the servers you typed in. Use All local to reset them yourself.
  • Erase everything on this device removes them along with everything else.
