Nixt PDF

Read, fill in, mark up, edit text, redact, stamp and sign PDF documents on your own computer, without an account and without sending the file anywhere.

Nixt PDF opens, reads and changes PDF documents (.pdf) on the computer it runs on. You don’t need an account to open a file, nothing is synced, and the app sends no telemetry. The one feature that uses the network is a trusted timestamp on a digital signature, and only when you ask for one and name the server yourself.

What Nixt PDF is for

Nixt PDF is built for PDFs and opens nothing else. If you choose a Word document, a spreadsheet or a presentation, it tells you which Nixt Office app opens that file instead — Nixt Writer, Nixt Sheets or Nixt Slides.

It is designed around two ideas:

  • What you change is added, not rewritten. Almost every edit is added to the end of the file as a new revision, and the rest of the document is left byte for byte as it was. That is what keeps an existing digital signature intact when you fill in a form or add a comment, and it is how Undo works: it takes the last revision off again.
  • Some jobs must not leave the old version behind. Redaction, adding or removing a password, removing hidden content and reducing the file size rewrite the whole file, so nothing you removed survives in an earlier revision. These are the operations that can’t be undone.

Where to start

  1. Read Getting started to open a document, save your changes and close it again.
  2. Read The window for a tour of the ribbon, the tool strip, the side panel and the More menu.
  3. Keep Keyboard shortcuts and Troubleshooting to hand.

What stays on your computer

  • The documents you open, and every change you make to them.
  • Your saved signatures and initials, your own stamps, your details for stamps, and the certificates you have chosen to trust.
  • The list of recently opened files.

A digital ID’s private key and its password are never stored. You choose the digital ID file each time you sign, and Nixt PDF forgets both when the signature is made. See Privacy and your data.

  • File formats — what Nixt PDF reads and writes, and what it keeps unchanged.
