Presenting a slide show

Start the slide show, move through slides and animations, follow links, present on a projector and end the show.

To start the slide show while the slide master is open, close the master first. See Editing the slide master.

What you see

  • The slide, as large as the window allows, on a black background.
  • At the bottom-right: the slide number and total, such as “3 / 12”, and a Leave (Esc) button.
  • At the bottom-left: the first three lines of the slide’s speaker notes, in faint text, when the slide has notes.

Empty placeholders are blank; their “Click to add” prompts aren’t shown.

The slide show fills the app’s window, not the whole screen. To fill the screen:

  • macOS: before or during the slide show, choose View › Enter Full Screen from the menu bar, or press ⌃⌘F.
  • Windows and Linux: maximise the window.

Move through the slide show

Run the next animation step, or go to the next slide→, Space or Page DownClick
Take back the last animation step, or go to the previous slide← or Page UpRight-click
End the slide showEscClick Leave (Esc)
  • Hidden slides are skipped when you move forwards or backwards.
  • Transitions play as each slide arrives, going forwards or backwards. See Transitions.
  • Animations run one step per click; going back to a slide shows it fully built. See Animations in the slide show.
  • The show stays on the last slide until you end it.

Click a shape whose text links to a web address. The address opens in your web browser, and the slide show stays where it is. Only http:// and https:// addresses open. See How links behave.

Slides that advance on their own

If the presentation has rehearsed timings and Slide Show › Set up › Advance on the deck’s own timings is on, each slide moves on by itself once its time is up. Clicking still moves on sooner. See Rehearsed timings.

Presenting to a projector or second display

The slide show runs inside the app’s window. To show slides on a projector or second display:

  1. Connect the display.
  2. Either move the app’s window to that display and fill the screen as described above, or turn on display mirroring in your operating system’s display settings.
  3. Start the slide show.

Everything the slide show shows, including the speaker notes at the bottom-left, appears on every screen that shows the window.

End the slide show

Press Esc or click Leave (Esc). You return to the editor on the slide that was showing.

Rehearse

To time your presentation, use Slide Show › Set up › Rehearse timings. During a rehearsal the button at the bottom-right reads End (Esc). See Rehearsed timings.
