Transitions and animations

Choose how each slide arrives in the slide show, and bring shapes onto a slide with entrance animations.

Transitions and animations play only in the slide show. The canvas always shows every shape in place, so you can edit the slide.

Transitions

A transition is how a slide arrives in the slide show. It belongs to the slide it leads into: the transition you set on slide 4 plays when slide 4 comes on screen.

Set a slide’s transition

  1. Go to the slide.
  2. Choose Transitions › Transition and open the menu (tooltip “Transition into this slide. Dissolve plays as a fade.”).
  3. Choose a transition.

The menu shows the current slide’s transition, with a check mark next to it in the list. Set each slide separately. The slide inspector’s Transition field also shows the current slide’s transition.

TransitionHow it plays
NoneThe slide appears at once
FadeThe slide fades in over the previous one
PushThe slide slides in from the side and pushes the previous one out. Going backwards, it comes from the other side.
WipeThe slide is uncovered from the left edge across
SplitThe slide is uncovered from the middle outwards to both sides
CutThe slide appears at once
DissolvePlays as Fade
ZoomThe slide grows into place as it fades in

Transitions take a little under half a second.

When you go back a slide in the slide show, the transition of the slide you arrive at plays.

Transitions from PowerPoint files

The eight transitions above are read from the file and played. PowerPoint 2010 and later often save a newer effect together with a standard one; the standard one is what plays here.

When you save, a slide whose transition type you didn’t change keeps its transition exactly as the file had it, including its speed, direction, sound and any newer effect; only a changed advance time is written. If you choose a different type, the new transition keeps the old speed and sound and uses its own default direction.

Animations

Nixt Slides supports entrance animations: effects that bring a shape onto the slide.

Add an entrance animation

  1. Select a shape on the slide.
  2. On the Animations tab, under Entrance, click an effect: Appear, Fade, Wipe, Fly in, Zoom or Split. The tooltip reads “Bring the shape on with” and the effect name.

The new animation is added at the end of the slide’s animation order, starts On click and lasts 0.50 seconds. The effect’s button is highlighted while that shape is selected.

To change a shape’s effect, select the shape and click a different effect. A shape can have one animation.

EffectHow the shape arrives
AppearAt once
FadeFades in
WipeIs uncovered from its left edge
Fly inRises into place from slightly below while fading in
ZoomGrows from a smaller size while fading in
SplitIs uncovered from its horizontal centre line, up and down at once

Choose when it starts

Select the shape, then click one of the buttons under Animations › Start:

ButtonTooltipWhat it means
On click“On click — waits for a click”Waits for you to click or press a key
With previous“With previous — runs with the one before it”Runs at the same time as the animation before it
After previous“After previous — runs when the one before it finishes”Runs as soon as the animation before it finishes, without a click

The animations that run together on one click form a step: an On click animation plus every With previous and After previous animation after it. The first animation on a slide always starts a step. The Start buttons are unavailable, with the tooltip “Give the shape an animation first”, until the selected shape has an animation.

Change how long it takes

Select the shape and choose a length from the menu under Animations › Timing (tooltip “How long the effect takes”): 0.25s, 0.50s, 0.80s, 1.20s or 2s.

Change the order

Select the shape and click Run this one earlier (up arrow) or Run this one later (down arrow) under Animations › Timing. The shape’s animation moves one place in the slide’s order.

Remove an animation

Select the shape and click the eraser button under Animations › Entrance (tooltip Remove the animation). When the shape has no animation, the tooltip says “This shape does not animate”.

See the slide’s animations

The This slide group shows a summary: “No animations”, or the number of animations and steps — for example “4 in 3 steps”. Its tooltip reads “Effects run in order; a click runs the next step.”

Animations in the slide show

  • When a slide with animations arrives, the shapes that animate aren’t on it yet. Shapes without an animation are there from the start.
  • Each click, →, Space or Page Down runs the next step. When every step has run, the next click moves to the next slide.
  • ← or Page Up takes back one step at a time, then goes to the previous slide.
  • Arriving on a slide by going backwards shows it with every step already run.
  • The first step always waits for a click. If the slide has a transition, the transition finishes before you click.

See Presenting a slide show.

Animations from PowerPoint files

  • Entrance effects play. An entrance effect that isn’t one of the six plays as the closest of the six, or as Fade.
  • On a slide that has emphasis, exit or motion-path animations, the Animations tab is unavailable, and the slide’s animations are kept exactly as they are when you save. The slide’s entrance effects play.

A slide’s animations are saved exactly as they were until you change them on that slide.

Animations and other commands

  • Only shapes directly on the slide can be animated. Grouping shapes removes their animations; a group can have an animation of its own. See Groups and animations.
  • Deleting a shape removes its animation.
